No-clean fluxes made many manufacturers skip washing — but for automotive electronics, medical devices, power modules, high-frequency RF boards and any product with conformal coating, cleaning after soldering is not optional. Understanding what the residue is and what it does is the first step to a reliable cleaning process.
What Is Left on the Board
Soldering flux contains activators (organic acids or halides), rosin or resin, solvents and additives. After reflow or wave soldering the solvent evaporates, leaving rosins, reacted activator salts and metal ions on and under components. Low-residue no-clean fluxes leave less material, but under low-standoff parts such as BGA, QFN and 0402 components, residue remains trapped where visual inspection cannot reach it.
How Residue Causes Failures
Ionic residues dissolve in humidity and form conductive electrolytes. The result: surface insulation resistance drops, leakage currents rise, and in combination with bias voltage, electrochemical migration grows dendrites that short circuits. Rosin residues degrade adhesives of conformal coatings, causing delamination, and outgas in vacuum or high-temperature environments. These failures appear months after shipment — in the field, at your customer, at your cost.
How Washing Machines Remove It
Professional cleaning systems dissolve residues in three stages: spray washing with a water-based cleaning fluid (often heated to 40–60 °C for activation), DI-water rinse zones that remove the dissolved soil and the fluid itself, and hot-air drying. Multiple spray bars with dedicated nozzles reach under components, and the fluid is maintained by filtration and concentration control. The result is verified by ionic contamination measurement (ROSE test) or ion chromatography.
