Buying a PCBA cleaning machine is a process decision, not a purchase decision: the machine must remove your flux residue to your customer's cleanliness spec, at your daily volume, at a cost per board that makes sense. This checklist walks through the five factors that decide the right machine.
1. Board Dimensions and Transport
Measure your largest pallet: compatible board size and transport width set the machine chamber. Fixtures and carriers must pass through the wash, rinse and dry zones without blocking spray bars. If you clean mixed products, choose adjustable transport and fixture options rather than a single-format chamber.
2. Daily Throughput: Inline or Offline
Inline conveyor washers process a pallet every 2–6 minutes and fit stable production above roughly 300–500 boards per day. Offline batch machines clean a basket in 20–60 minutes including drying — ideal for prototypes, rework and mixed production below that threshold. Cost per board, not machine price, is the comparison that matters: at high volume the inline system wins, below a few hundred boards a day the batch machine is more economical.
3. Flux Type and Cleaning Chemistry
No-clean, rosin, water-soluble and lead-free fluxes dissolve at different temperatures and concentrations. Water-based fluids heated to 40–60 °C cover most fluxes; the machine should offer closed-loop fluid dosing, concentration control and multi-stage filtration so wash chemistry stays stable batch after batch.
4. Cleanliness Spec and Verification
Common targets are IPC J-STD-001 limits or customer-specific values below 1.0 µg/cm² NaCl equivalent. The machine must reach under low-standoff parts (BGA, QFN, 0402) with directed spray, rinse with DI water, and dry with hot air so residues and water spots are gone. Plan verification from day one: ROSE test (ionic contamination measurement) for routine control, ion chromatography for root-cause analysis.
5. Operation, Footprint and Support
Check spray pressure and flow rate against chamber size, power supply (110/220/380 V, 50/60 Hz), water and compressed-air connections, floor space and service access. Prefer a supplier offering English documentation, remote commissioning and spare-parts stock — and ask for a cleaning trial with your own boards before you commit.
